Sonora Smart Dodd from Spokane Washington started Father's Day at the age of 27. Sonora was inspired to start this holiday while attending a Mother's Day celebration at her church. Her mother died giving birth to a younger sibling when Sonora was 16 years old. William Jackson Smart, Sonora's father, a farmer and Civil War veteran. raised six children alone.
